Pullover Hoodie, Zip-Up or Sweatshirt? Choosing the Right Blank for Your Design

Pullover hoodies, zip-up hoodies and crewneck sweatshirts stocked by Print & Wear

The artwork might be identical. The garment should not always be.

A pullover hoodie, zip-up hoodie and crewneck sweatshirt each gives the design a different canvas. Here is how to choose.

Pullover hoodie: the uninterrupted front

A pullover hoodie gives you a large continuous area through the centre of the chest. That makes it useful for large centred illustrations, bold typography, logos that need a clean central position, and designs that would be awkward split by a zip.

It also gives you a hooded silhouette without forcing the artwork to work around a centre opening.

Zip-up hoodie: design around the zip

The zip is part of the garment. Do not pretend it isn’t there.

A design that depends on a continuous central image may need to be adjusted. Zip-up hoodies often work well with smaller left or right chest designs, large back artwork, intentionally split layouts, and front designs specifically built around the opening.

Choose the zip-up because it suits the use and the design — not because it is simply “the same hoodie with a zip.”

Sweatshirt: clean crewneck shape

A sweatshirt gives you the fleece-style upper-body shape without a hood. The front remains clean and uninterrupted.

That can make it useful for minimal branding, front illustrations, team clothing, company apparel, and designs where a hood is unnecessary.

Think about the back too

A hood changes how the upper back can look when worn down. If your design sits high on the back, preview how it interacts visually with the hood. A sweatshirt does not have that obstruction.

Start with the artwork

Does the artwork need an uninterrupted centre? Is the main design on the back? Is the garment for staff? Is the zip function important? Does the design feel better as streetwear or as a clean crewneck?

The answers usually make the garment choice clearer.

Check colours and sizes before deciding

Our core stocked range is available in multiple sizes and colours, subject to current availability.

Do not finalise a team design around an unavailable garment colour.

One piece or a group order

You can start with one piece. For larger quantities, Sizes and colours of the same garment count together toward its bulk tier. Different garment types are calculated separately.

The best blank is the one that makes the artwork feel like it belongs there. See the custom hoodie page for the three silhouettes we stock.
